Poker Hands
If you are just starting out playing poker, either in an online poker room or playing video poker as part of your online casino, it can be confusing to know what all the hands mean. But getting to know what each hand is and what you will win is really important.
So here is our handy guide to poker hands, the following are in order of ranking so will show you what hand beats the other hands.
Royal Flush
This is the highest ranking standard poker hand you can have and will beat all other hands. In order to get a Royal Flush you need to have the Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten of the same suit.
Straight Flush
A straight flush is similar to the Royal Flush in the fact that you have to have five cards in order of the same suit, only unlike the Royal Flush its doesn’t consist of all of the picture cards. So for example if you had a five, six, seven, eight and nine of hearts that would be a straight flush.
The higher the highest card of a straight flush, the higher the ranking, so a straight flush with nine as the highest card would beat one which had six as its highest card.
Four of a kind
This basically consists of four cards of the same rank so for example your hand could consist of all the kings and a ten.
As with a straight flush if more than one player has four of a kind then the one with the highest cards wins so kings would beat a four of a kind consisting of tens, for example.
Full house
This is a hand that consists of three cards of the same rank as well as a set of two cards of the same rank. So for example you could have three aces and two jacks and that would be a full house. With this the higher the rank of the three card set the higher the full house.
Flush
This is simply five cards of the same suit that aren’t in order. Again the highest ranked card is used to determine the rank of the flush.
Straight
A straight is five cards in sequence that aren’t of the same suit.
Three of a kind
This consists of three cards of the same rank and two other non-matching cards so, for example three tens and one jack and one four.
Two pair
This is two sets of matching ranked cards and an unrelated one so for example; two jacks, two twos and an eight.
Pair
This is simply a pair of matching ranked cards so for example an eight, ten, six and pair of fours.
High card
If a hand doesn’t have any of the above so no matching cards etc then the highest card determines the strength of the hand. However, this hand will be beaten but the above hands.
